OP14, The Azure Sea's Seven: the Seven Warlords take power
With « The Azure Sea's Seven » (OP14), the One Piece Card Game devotes an entire set to the Seven Warlords of the Sea, those pirates once allied with the World Government who shaped the whole first half of the saga. The programme lives up to the cast: seven leader cards, one for each Warlord of the golden era, alternate Super Rares from the companion set EB04, a series of nine SP cards, two commemorative Buggys, Manga Event cards and two Secret Rares crowned by a Dracule Mihawk Manga card that stands as the holy grail. Let us review the set, from the most accessible cards to the most buried treasures.
Seven leaders for Seven Warlords
This is the backbone of the set: each of the seven former Warlords gets a leader card. Trafalgar Law the strategist, Dracule Mihawk the world's greatest swordsman, Jinbe the knight of the sea, Boa Hancock the snake empress, Donquixote Doflamingo the puppet master of Dressrosa, Crocodile the former head of Baroque Works and Gecko Moria the lord of shadows. Each leader turns their character's style into game mechanics: power manipulation for Law, advantages against Slash-trait leaders for Mihawk, control and intimidation for Doflamingo. Seven archetypes at once, enough to reshape the meta in depth and let everyone play their favourite Warlord.
The alternates from companion set EB04
OP14 releases hand in hand with the EB04 set, several cards of which slip into boosters as very fine alternate versions. Kikunojo activates a Land of Wano leader as soon as it enters play, Carrot readies up to two Minks characters, and you will also meet Megalo, Admiral Issho (Fujitora), Nefeltari Vivi and King in full-card illustrations. Cards both playable and decorative, perfect for filling a binder without breaking the bank: the entry gate of the OP14 collection.
Nine SP cards, a dream cast
The OP14 SP series is one of the largest ever offered: nine reprints of emblematic cards, dressed in brand-new illustrations and special finishes. It features Edward Weevil, Eustass « Captain » Kid, Fleet Admiral Sengoku, little Sugar of the Donquixote Family, Dracule Mihawk, Roronoa Zoro, the Kid & Killer duo, the ghostly Perona and Boa Hancock, sumptuous on her throne amid lanterns and Kuja motifs. Nine characters spanning every era of the saga: any booster can hide one of these trophies, and the Hancock already stands as the most sought-after of the series.
The two commemorative Buggys
Set apart from the SP series, two special versions of Buggy (OP09-051) celebrate the clown who became an Emperor in spite of himself. The same outsized illustration, Buggy ejected from his hot-air-balloon cape under a rain of confetti, but two distinct dressings: a circus frame in warm golden tones for one, a silvery blue variation for the other. This assumed duo, in the tradition of the commemorative pairs of previous sets, is a collector magnet: the kind of card you frame rather than play.
The Manga Event cards: Mihawk and Hancock in action
As has been the case since OP10, Event cards get their manga treatment: illustrations taken straight from Eiichiro Oda's pages, more accessible than the ultra-rare Manga cards yet just as evocative. OP14 has two of them, perfectly in tune with its headliners: « Ground Death » (OP14-096), Mihawk's blade cleaving everything in its path, and « You'll Frighten Me... ♡ » (OP14-118), Hancock's legendary arrogance caught in a single panel. Two cult moments of the manga you can actually slot into your deck.
The two Secret Rares: Mihawk and Crocodile
At the top of the numbered rarities, OP14 crowns two legendary Warlords. The Dracule Mihawk Secret Rare (OP14-119) locks down the opponent's game: it can prevent an enemy character from readying and strengthen your fighters mid-battle. The Crocodile Secret Rare (OP14-120) asserts itself with abilities worthy of the former Baroque Works president. Each exists in a base version and a full-card alternate illustration, the latter being, of course, the more coveted of the two.
The holy grail: the Mihawk in manga version
And since every set hides its ultimate treasure, OP14 reserves for Dracule Mihawk a Manga card for the ages. The world's greatest swordsman poses at the centre of a montage of black-and-white manga panels, Yoru in hand, surrounded by his cult lines: « Strive to surpass me » and « The greatest swordsman in the world ». Pulled at a minuscule rate, it is by far the hardest card to hit in the set, the one that makes people open entire displays. For Manga card collectors, it joins the lineage of masterpieces that define each set.
The Azure Sea's Seven is a love letter to the Seven Warlords: seven leaders resurrecting the most charismatic figures of the first half of One Piece, a plethoric SP series, chiselled Manga Events and a Mihawk Manga card enthroned in the pantheon of the game. For players, the chance to finally build their favourite Warlord's deck; for collectors, a set dense with treasures where every booster may hold a surprise. OP14 confirms that the One Piece Card Game knows how to honour its own past without ever repeating itself.
