OP12, Legacy of the Master: the One Piece Card Game set of May 2025

OP12, Legacy of the Master: the One Piece Card Game set of May 2025

The twelfth set of the One Piece trading card game published by Bandai, titled Legacy of the Master (OP-12), was released in Japan on May 31, 2025. Built on the theme of the strong bonds uniting masters and disciples, this set offers players thrilling battles thanks to new leaders with fresh strategies. With 127 different cards (plus one additional secret card) on the programme, Legacy of the Master enriches the game with innovative mechanics and many exclusive rarities. Aimed at collectors and competitors alike, this highly anticipated release celebrates One Piece's emblematic mentorships while deeply renewing the game experience. On the menu: six new leaders, breathtaking alternate illustrations, ultra-rare Special cards and even a secret « Manga » card to unearth in boosters.

The flagship leaders of OP12

The legendary Silvers Rayleigh, nicknamed the « Dark King », makes a remarkable entrance as a leader in OP12. His presence perfectly illustrates the transmission theme of this set centred on mentor-disciple duos: Rayleigh, Luffy's former mentor, is joined by two emblematic characters forming the « twin wings » of the future Pirate King, Roronoa Zoro and Sanji, who also arrive as brand-new Leader cards. Rayleigh's card banks on Haki to turn games around, bringing new tactics to exploit, while Zoro and Sanji offer innovative effects underlining their role as pillars of Luffy's crew.

In total, the set counts six brand-new Leader cards. Besides Rayleigh, Zoro and Sanji, fans reunite with Kuzan (ex-Admiral Aokiji, now allied with Blackbeard), Donquixote Rosinante (alias Corazon, Law's self-sacrificing mentor) and Koala (former slave become disciple of the Revolutionary Army). Each illustrates in their own way an emblematic master-pupil relationship of the series. With their varied colours (some Leader cards being two-colour) and innovative effects, these new deck chiefs further widen players' strategic options. In gameplay terms, each Leader brings an unprecedented ability that encourages new tactical approaches and strengthens deck synergies.

The alternate cards

The Legacy of the Master set brims with alternate illustrations for some of its most prized cards, to collectors' delight. These alternate versions offer brand-new full-format visuals and special finishes, adding notable aesthetic value to high-rarity cards. Every Leader of the set, for example, gets an exclusive full-art alternate variant, showcasing the character from a new artistic angle. Likewise, several Super Rares such as Monkey D. Luffy, Dracule Mihawk, Boa Hancock and Perona get a collector alternate artwork in this set, further strengthening their appeal in decks and display cases alike.

The artistic direction of the alternates also evolves with OP12: some cards sport a brand-new « constellation » background motif, never seen in the game before. This shimmering cosmic design, introduced for the occasion, gives OP12's alternate cards a unique visual identity that sets them apart from previous sets. Collectors salute this aesthetic risk-taking by Bandai, which brings a breath of fresh air to binders and play mats alike.

The Special (SP) cards

OP12 devotes its Special (SP) series to reprints: six in number, these cards are reissues of popular cards (from older sets or preconstructed decks), endowed for the occasion with an entirely new artwork and a special marking. Bandai selected emblematic characters for these SP editions, echoing the set's master-disciple theme. For example, there is a Special version of Portgas D. Ace (a card originally from the ST-13 deck) illustrated anew, alongside Yasopp (Usopp's father), Kuzan, Tashigi, Lim and Zoro-Juurou, all likewise magnified by a unique collector visual.

The Portgas D. Ace SP card (code ST13-011) particularly caught the editorial team's attention. Visually, it presents Ace in an iconic stance, sublimated by a blazing background recalling his fire power. In play, the card also stands out for its efficiency: if the player is in a critical situation (2 Life or less), Ace gains the Rush ability, allowing him to attack immediately. This editorial favourite thus combines an extraordinary illustration with an ability that perfectly translates the character's fighting spirit, making it one of the most sought-after SPs of the set.

The Secret Rare cards

The set counts two Secret Rare (SEC) cards as headliners. True to the master's-legacy theme, Bandai's choice fell on Jewelry Bonney and Bartholomew Kuma as this set's secrets. A surprising but coherent duo: Bonney, the Worst Generation pirate, shares a mysterious filial bond with Kuma, the ex-Warlord turned human weapon of the Government. These two characters, linked by a story of broken transmission, here inherit particularly powerful and coveted cards.

The Jewelry Bonney Secret Rare proves to be a strategic blocker: when a certain number of cards are rested, she allows drawing and manipulating DON!!, symbolising Bonney's determination to turn the situation around. Bartholomew Kuma, for his part, offers an unprecedented survival power: he can add cards from the deck to Life mid-combat, reflecting his last-resort protective role. These unique abilities, combined with their extreme rarity, make Bonney and Kuma the most feared, and hardest to obtain, cards of Legacy of the Master.

The Manga Event cards: Zoro and Sanji

Two new Event cards stand out in OP12 « Legacy of the Master »: OP12-037 (Zoro) and OP12-060 (Sanji), classified in the new rarity known as « Manga Event ». Introduced for the first time in OP10 with the card OP10-019 Divine Departure, this format consists of Event cards illustrated directly from original panels of Eiichiro Oda's manga. Unlike the ultra-limited Manga rares, these cards have a drop rate equivalent to that of classic alternate cards, making them more accessible while retaining strong aesthetic and symbolic value. Visually striking, OP12-037 shows Zoro unleashing his Ashura in a powerful, sharp layout, while OP12-060 captures Sanji in a blazing attack, faithful to his combat dynamics. In play, these cards offer efficient effects, such as draw or counter, that seduce strategists and passionate manga collectors alike.

Blackbeard anniversary SP cards

The OP12 set « Legacy of the Master » celebrates three years of the One Piece Card Game with the introduction of two special SP cards honouring Marshall D. Teach, alias Blackbeard. These two commemorative cards, identified under code OP09-093, come in exclusive Gold and Silver versions. It is a reprint of the Super Rare originally released in OP09, but enhanced with a fully foil design, sublimated by a golden or silver finish depending on the version. The brand-new illustration shows Blackbeard in a triumphant pose, holding a cup of sake to mark the event. These cards were officially classified by Bandai in the special « 3rd Anniversary » SP category, making them both playable and ultra-sought-after by collectors. Produced in limited quantities, they are regarded as master pieces of the OP12 set, combining visual prestige and strategic impact on the field.

The Manga Rare card

Like previous editions, OP12 holds a Manga Rare, a secret alternate card whose illustration is taken from Eiichiro Oda's original manga. This time it is Jewelry Bonney who receives this exceptional treatment. Her black-and-white artwork, directly inspired by the manga's graphic style, gives the character a new dimension and will surely touch fans who know her tragic bond with Kuma. Extremely hard to obtain (one Manga Rare in several displays on average), this « Oda-version » Bonney already stands as one of the master pieces for collectors in Legacy of the Master.

OP11 vs OP12: novelties and evolutions

The previous set, OP-11 « A Fist of Divine Speed » (March 2025), differed noticeably from OP12 on several points. OP11 focused on the Whole Cake Island and Fish-Man Island arcs, notably introducing the SWORD faction trait among the Marines, whereas OP12 adopts a cross-cutting approach embracing various mentorships throughout the story. Gameplay-wise, OP11 strengthened existing archetypes with new leaders based on familiar figures (Luffy, Nami, Katakuri, etc.) and new colour combinations. OP12, for its part, innovates by introducing entirely new leader mechanics centred on master-pupil synergy, deeply renewing the strategies available in play. In terms of rarities, OP11 inaugurated the Treasure Rare (a single ultra-rare off-set card, e.g. Lucky Roux) while OP12 instead offers an exclusive Manga Rare (Jewelry Bonney) as its bonus collector card. Both sets celebrate the game's 3rd anniversary with two Special Anniversary cards each, but OP12 goes further with its Special reprint cards: where OP11 used its 6 Specials merely for illustration alternates within the set, OP12 devotes its six to reissues of emblematic cards from previous products, a novelty applauded by fans. In the end, Legacy of the Master stands out from its predecessor through its strong emotional theme and its gameplay innovations, while continuing the success story of the One Piece Card Game.

In the end, the OP12 Legacy of the Master set stands as a content-rich turning point for the One Piece Card Game. With its bold new leaders, innovative alternate cards and exclusive special rarities, it offers both strategic novelty for players and choice collector pieces for die-hard fans. The master-disciple bond theme brings welcome narrative coherence to the whole, while opening the way to new tournament synergies. Already acclaimed in Japan since its release, OP12 fuels the impatience of the international community awaiting its worldwide distribution by the end of summer 2025. Between homage to the manga and gameplay evolutions, Legacy of the Master succeeds in renewing the excitement around the One Piece card game while preparing the ground for the TCG's next chapters.
